IPL vs EPL: How the leagues compare

Comparing the English Premier League vs IPL

The IPL is now comfortably the most popular franchise T20 competition, with the Indian Premier League having grown in size and popularity since its inception in 2008. Ten teams now compete against each other during the months of April and May, with this an enormous global sporting competition.

IPL Broadcasting Rights

To give you an idea of the scale of the IPL, the broadcasting rights are now more valuable than English Premier League football. The BCCI were able to sell the broadcasting rights for an eye-watering ₹48,390 crore (US$6.1 billion) in June 2022, with the package covering the 2023 season right through to the 2027 campaign.

Indeed, it’s only the NFL which now commands a bigger pay day, with the Indian Premier League featuring a round robin format which has returned to home and away in 2023 after three years of the schedule being affected by COVID-19.

Nevertheless, the growth of the IPL as a product has been unmatched in recent years. It is now the most-attended cricket league on the planet, with 2010 being a breakthrough year in part due to the IPL being the first sporting event that was actually broadcast live on YouTube.

Premier League vs IPL

Not to say that the English Premier League soccer pales into insignificance. This is another global sporting competition and the advantage is that the season spans roughly 75% of a calendar year. Traditionally it starts in August and ends in May, with twenty clubs competing in a league format for major honours.

In recent years, there has been a growth in overseas club owners, with a large number of American consortiums acquiring control of clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United. Similarly, there are groups in the Far East that now own Manchester City and Newcastle United.

EPL vs IPL Similarities

The Indian Premier League and English Premier League therefore have parallels in so far that they are two of the biggest sporting club competitions in the world in terms of popularity, with billionaire owners now hugely invested into the success of various franchises.

The IPL is a competition that has really put Test cricket in the corner when it comes to the Indian national team. The excitement starts to build from late December when the IPL auction takes place and there are some enormous fees paid by the franchises as they bid to snap up the most talented players on the market.

IPL Most Expensive Player

For example, Sam Curran was bought by Punjab Kings for ₹18.50 crore (US$2.3 million) in December 2022 and ahead of the 2023 season. This was a record-breaking amount to pay for an individual player and the auction has similarities with the NFL draft that takes place, although the latter focuses on the best college players that are for sale.

Although it’s not a precise figure, the estimated brand value of the IPL in 2022 was ₹90,038 crore (US$11 billion). This is a competition where seven cities and three states compete against each other, with the fanbases now creating their own identity and the rivalries between the various teams is enormous.

The English Premier League is certainly no slouch when it comes to attendances, with this being the most-watched sports league in the world and it can lay claim to being a more truly global product when you consider that it’s broadcast in over 200 territories and now reaches roughly 650 million homes.

IPL Brand Value

As mentioned, we are now looking upwards of US$11 billion when it comes to the brand value of the Indian Premier League. This number has increased hugely in the past twelve to eighteen months, with 2022 seeing the brand value roughly double compared to the end of 2021 figure and it will be interesting to see if the numbers continue to explode.

The addition of two extra teams has certainly allowed for some of this growth although the IPL are currently content to keep the number of franchises and there’s definitely a focus on not diluting a brand as they aim to achieve more global reach when it comes to the 2023 tournament.

IPL Media TV Rights Cost

In addition to the media rights being sold for $6.2 billion in June 2022, there was also the sale of two new franchises which boosted the coffers. The proceeds of the sale when it came to Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants raised in the region of Rs 12,500 crore ($1.5 billion) and there is now plenty of speculation when it comes to more franchises being created.

After all, the IPL will be casting an eye towards the English Premier League and the NFL as global competitions where a much larger number of teams are participating and there might be a slowdown in growth during 2023 as the market consolidates after two new teams and the securing of a long-term rights deal for broadcast.

Most Valuable IPL Teams

Although Gujarat Titans were the 2022 IPL champions, the most valuable Indian Premier League teams are Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings. Mumbai were estimated to be worth $83 million in 2022, with the teams splashing the cash when it came to the recent December 2022 auction where 405 players were shortlisted.

Sam Curran was the most expensive purchase when being acquired by Punjab Kings for ₹18.50 crore (US$2.3 million), with 123 overseas players being listed along with 273 players native to India.

IPL Sponsors

The combined television and digital rights for the period between 2023 and 2027 was two and a half times bigger than the previous rights cycle that took place between 2018 and 2022. It’s a similar story when it comes to the sponsorship and it’s Tata who have now acquired the title rights.

It has been reported by media outlets that the BCCI would receive $62 million for the 2022 and 2023 season from their title sponsors, with Vivo having previously made headlines In June 2017 when the Chinese smartphone manufacturer retained the rights for the next five seasons (2018–2022).

This winning bid of ₹2,199 crore (US$280 million) made the deal more expensive than Barclays’ English Premier League title sponsorship contract between 2013 and 2016, with the Premier League currently operating without a sponsor and they have opted for a clean brand despite previously having Barclays in the title.

Although the Barclays deal was previously worth around £40 million to the English Premier League, there was a strategic decision for the tournament to compete more effectively internationally and challenge NFL and NBA when it came to overseas reach. Indeed, it is estimated that the EPL now generates £5.136bn when it comes to annual broadcasting revenue.

Top IPL Teams

Mumbai Indians are the most successful IPL team of all time. They have secured five titles in total and they were achieved between 2013 and 2020. This milestone was achieved in 2017, with the team playing their home matches at the Wankhede Stadium and they play in a distinctive blue kit.

The Chennai Super Kings are also a huge IPL franchise and they recorded back to back successes in 2010 and 2011. More recently, the Super Kings were crowned champions in 2018 and 2021, with the team playing their cricket at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. They have also won the Champions League in 2010 and 2014, with Chennai playing in an all-yellow strip.

The inaugural Premier League winners were Rajasthan Royals when they claimed the maiden title in 2008. The history makers have so far fallen short when it comes to landing a second championship success, although they did finish runner-up in 2022 and they are a well-supported team who play at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Ajinkya Rahane is the team’s record run-scorer with 3098 runs, while the leading wicket-taker is Shane Watson who has managed 67.

Step forward Kolkata Knight Riders, with this team having been one of the 2008 founding members and they have been crowned champions in 2012 and 2014. Manchester City are now one of the most successful English clubs and they have been Premier League champions on six occasions. Between the 2017-18 season and the 2021-22 season, they recorded four separate title successes under Pep Guardiola. Playing under Pep Guardiola, they are often among the Champions League favourites and have also won a lot of domestic cups.

Tottenham Hotspur are regarded as part of the Big Six in the English Premier League although they haven’t won a league title since 1961. However, they have won the FA Cup on eight separate occasions and also triumphed in the League Cup four times. They also reached the Champions League final in 2019 and play at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
